live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix five news. a massive mudslide is forcing evacuations, tonight several bay area homes are at risk. a new round of rain has a threat of more flooding. we begin tonight with the mudslide that crashed down near several homes in burnsville. it happened along santa rosa avenue. joe vazquez got caught in the middle. >> reporter: liz, this is insult to injury here in gvdel. already the pounding rain is making the worst flooding in more than a decade even worse and just above the town they

are digging out from a massive mudslide. up the hill above the river we found a huge slide covering santa rosa avenue. the road has become muddy waterfall. some homes are red tagged deemed uninhabitable by the county. it's hard to tell on tv just how huge this mudslide is, think about a large slide at a water park, maybe 50 or 75 feet long from top to bottom. the mud is deep, with high on me, for the rest of the story we have to go around. here on the other side, the road is impassable. the mud is very thick. no doubt this road will be compromised or some time. this area is sparsely populated with spaced out homes, how much damage is done? it's too dark to tell will have to wait for daylight to see the

full scope of the damage of the big mudslide. probably not the best idea to try to walk through it but i guess we were determined to bring the story. it is cold and wet, i am on my second raincoat. you can imagine what the folks here are dealing with as the storm and another storm continued to wreak havoc year. this is joe vazquez. chief meteorologist pollyanna is tracking -- paul vienna has more.>> the north bay mountains have been exacerbated the most. napa county sonoma county, title loma north to santa rosa, said alana -- st. helena, inverness all getting steady rainfall. san ramon walnut creek and lafayette getting steady rainfall. all of this ahead of the storm

that will be here tomorrow evening causing another flash flood watch. we also have the king tides, there's a coastal flood advisory. it will also be windy with high winds in the high elevations. added up, it's a smaller version than what we had on the weekend with another storm tomorrow. we will talk about timing and which our will be the wettest coming up. in santa cruz county despite all the rain there is an emergency water shortage. betty? >> reporter: that's right liska all the rainwater we got that went into rivers and streams, that water is not treatable, the kind that is close to a pipeline that goes through the redwood park. the rain saturated ground so much it ruptured pipelines across the shortage. one of the city's majors

pipeline was no match for the relentless rain. the neural creek pipeline leak 15 leak 15,000s of gallons for hours before it was shut down.>> the land that has -- the land the shift around. we had a lot of rain over the last week with more coming tomorrow. this is not unexpected but it's not a great situation. >> reporter: the city asked residents to cut water use by 30 percent for the next week. >> we need folks to cut back on anything discretionary. if you can put off running a dishwasher or your laundry over the next few days, please do so.>> reporter: all of the city water supply is local mostly coming from flowing sources like rivers and streams but when powerful storms hit there is too much sediment making the water to cloudy street. the city relies on the pipeline to get water from a nearby reservoir.>> we can take shorter showers. second we just

heard about it. not quite sure how to save, i won't water the lawn. how do you think you can help to save water? >> shower less. >> reporter: the city says repair work will begin in the morning and the expected to take about a week to fix. the last time they saw a similar leak from a severe storm was back in 1982 here inside the same park. live in santa cruz county that a cruise. the russian river his ties low this afternoon at a crest of 35 35.2 feet. this rv camp along the russian river is now in it. major flooding has been forcing people to clear out of their homes, some even leading cars behind.

kirbyville schools and harmony union schools will be closed tomorrow. silverado trail is closed between polk street and deer park road and it will remain closed until at least 8 am tomorrow. kristin an airshow cestus -- >> reporter: there were mudslide all over the bay area today. they are scooping mud out of roadways and as paul says this is the beginning as far as wet weather.>> role roads throughout gilroy and morgan hill are washed out and landslides are still blocking highway 152 at watsonville road . authorities expect highway to stay closed until friday night. people live in the area say the rain has been relentless. >> it was a real downpour. at one point i was wondering if it would stop. > reporter: not before

turning low-lying roads into a pond.>> >> reporter: some residents didn't go far to see flooding. the river at highway 101 and 125 force rescues by votes. along the peninsula a mudslide overnight boat traffic on highway 1 to a crawl. drivers had to take turns getting five. the road reopened but caltrans it is monitoring the hillside. and a nevada the driver of this vehicle died after your the car slid off the highway and landed upside down the creek. raid there is expected to pick up overnight along with wins. -- along with gusty winds. this is expecting tomorrow's commute to be tough. the storm was too much for one ancient california tree. this is what's left of the

north bay. up to four inches of rain on tuesday already one end of rainfall in the sonoma county mountains tonight. still raining in st. helena and middletown. the sonoma county mountains is at 13 inches of rainfall since friday. look at all the rain in the north bay. san jose's cloudy but dry. san mateo county and the sierra are getting pounded with 6000 foot snow level. i 80 was closed last night due to mudslides. is closed because of whiteout conditions now. they had a mudslide last night but is closed again but this time because of slow. the russian river have a second crest wednesday afternoon just before dinnertime. 36.4 feet. that is nearly 1.5 feet higher than today. the flooding issue is not done along the russian river, if anything it will be higher in the next 48 hours.>> shasta lake, it is thing with the drought. mary -- nearly 20,000,000
